The bottleneck effect refers to a sudden reduction in the population of a species usually by some unexpected event.  A large natural disaster which destroys a large part of a population could be an example.  These events cause disruption to the normal genetic distribution and make it difficult for the species to recover and adapt. Please ask more questions if you need more clarification.
