Proteins differ in many different ways. They are composed of chains of amino acids linked together. Many have many different amino acids and some have only a few. Many have cross-bridges with other proteins. Some are extremely complex.

Some act on other proteins to break them down or build them up. These are called enzymes. Below is a very small protein. There are many, many more.

Proteins can be thought of as machines which do the work of the cell. Each protein has a specific shape.  The shape determines it's function.  The DNA includes all of the instructions on how to make these protein machines.

The biggest different between proteins is their shape.  This determines the jobs tha they will be able to do.
