When either biotic or abiotic of an environment factors are favorable to a specific phenotype or trait, the organisms which express that trait tend to survive and reproduce at a higher rate than those who might have other traits that are less favorable.  Since we can link phenotype to genotype, genes for advantageous traits are conserved within the population and continue to be expressed over many generations.  On the other hand, traits that provide no advantage tend to be selected against. Fewer of the species with these traits survive and reproduce.  Over the span of many generations, natural selection will select for and against traits.  It is often known as "The survival of the fittest."
