Although this is a very broad question there are several primary difference between cancer cells and normal somatic cells.  Cancer cells ignore instructions from the organism. They are fast growing and divide rapidly.  Somatic cells follow a more normal pattern of growth and division assigned by the organism.  Skin cells for example may divide if and when necessary but will only do so upon signaling instructions from the organism for some purpose such as the repair of tissue.
