In these types of environments non-living elements are extremely important in terms of shaping a diverse habitat. They often provide shelter and protection from sunlight or predators. Many species are specifically adapted to live in and around rocks or other non-living structures. Many of these species could not thrive in the open ocean conditions. It has become common practice to sink ships in some areas in order to provide a habitat for marine life and diversity for the ocean ecosystems, particularly in areas where coral reefs have been damaged or destroyed.
