Altering the DNA of the fertilized egg can result in genetic modification of the fully developed animal or organism.  Examples of this are the use of what is known as PHARM (pharmaceutical) animals which are genetically altered to produce human proteins such as insulin which can be used for human medical purposes.  The human insulin gene/genes are added to the animals DNA in a why that the altered animal will produce the human protein.
