Primary productivity can be used to indicate the overall size of the ecosystem in terms of energy.  Because energy cannot be created or destroyed by only transferred, primary producers will produce all of the energy to be consumed by the ecosystem. The amount of primary energy produced cannot be less than the energy need for the ecosystem.
